Makeup for Women Over 40

Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind for women over 40...
By the time we turn 40, we start to notice lines around the mouth, the forehead, and the eyes, and our makeup often begins to just sit differently on our faces. - Amanda Montell

Anti-Aging Skincare

Your best preparation for the makeup look you want is anti-aging skincare. Not just a wrinkle cream or tightening serum, but skincare for the eyes, as well.
Dark circles and bags under the eyes are concerns for almost everyone over 40. And while concealer works like a Band-Aid, treating your under-eyes with products formulated with active ingredients like caffeine, peptides, and chemical exfoliators will make your makeup look even better. - Amanda Montell

Makeup Tips

(1) Blend well, when you apply your foundation, using a brush or a blender sponge. Take care not to use too much. Instead of relying on your foundation to hide lines and wrinkles, use skincare to do it.

(2) Use a three-pronged approach to make your eyes look bigger and more open.

Start with an eyelash curler, then an eyeliner and mascara. That will make your eyeshadow play a supporting role in your makeup look, rather than needing it to take the leading role.

(3) Another way to give yourself an eyelift is to create a smokey eye with your makeup.

I think women associate the smoky eye with a dark, sooty look, but it doesn't have to be that. You can use soft pastel colours, or build up colour if you're feeling more brave. - makeup artist, Amanda Ramsay

She cautions us to keep it simple, using just one color and putting it under your eye, or using 2 soft colors. She suggests we avoid harsher colors like black or charcoal.

And she encourages you to blend, because according to her that's the real secret to a successful smokey eye.

(4) Over line your thinning lips just a little, to make them look a little plumper.

One final note - be open to making changes in your makeup routine. In fact, tell me in a comment anything you are now doing differently.

See you tomorrow!

Love, Jeanine

I appreciate that you encourage women to take care of their skin, as well as giving helpful and specific tips. Taking care of your skin isn't as fun as experimenting with a new eye or lip color, but it pays out more as we age. Thank you!

I think you're absolutely right! It's not as fun, and maybe not as easy, but it sure does pay off in the long run.

Debbie Allen's make up is amazing. I have always been a fan but seriously, she looks gorgeous. You might not believe it (or maybe you will) I have spent much of my life doing minimal skin care... due to lack of self worth. Lately, I have started a whole new regimen and I feel so much better about myself. I literally spent months at a time not looking at myself in a mirror... I'm a melanoma survivor - skin care OUGHT to be at the top of my list, but I didn't think I was worth it!

While I'm WAY over the 40 mark, I've never worn makeup. I do however have a cleansing and old lady cream and serum regiment.

Like Martha, I have never worn makeup (I think with the exception of my wedding and of course dance programs at school where it was needed).. But I have one standard turmeric based cream I have used for years (since I was a tween) and I think that has helped me..

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
