My Journey with Color, Makeup & Color Analysis

My Origin Story: it's about Eyeshadow..

When I was in the 6th grade, I noticed that some of the girls I envied were wearing makeup. Since I wanted to be beautiful like they were, I decided it was time to start wearing it, too. So off I went, to buy a Bonne Bell lip smacker.

But then, I realized I needed eyeshadow, too. And because it was what they were wearing, I chose powder blue as my very first eyeshadow color. And I layered that color on like I was frosting a cake!

Well, as you might imagine, that color looked a lot better on my classmates than it did on me, but that completely escaped me, and I thought I was too cool for school. Until one day when my teacher asked me to stay after class for a moment.

I was worried that somehow, I was in trouble, but as it turned out, she wanted to talk makeup. She told me she had noticed that I was beginning to wear eyeshadow but thought maybe I needed a little less.

I think she gave me tips for putting it on in a less intense way, but to be honest, it was all blah blah blah from there on out, because I was so surprised to be having that conversation at all. I did begin to wear less, though.

But just think - if she had been a well-trained color analyst, she could have said, "Jeanine, that powder blue is not doing you any favors." And maybe gently suggested a warmer color.

I also wonder what would have happened if there had been more options at the drugstore. Would I have been drawn to the warmer colors I normally wore in clothes?

Color Analysis: Intro to the Clear Dominant Color Home

Introduction to the Clear Dominant Color Home

Do you ever whistle while you work?

I ask because sometimes color analysis makes me think of Snow White. Though she may be in need of relationship counseling, one thing that is clear is her coloring.

She is our icon for the Clear Dominant color home. Clear Dominants have and need lots of contrast. They don’t do so well with monochromatic outfits.

Are You Clear Dominant?

Have you ever shied away from wearing a color that was just too bright for you?

The marvelous thing about the clear color home is that they will almost never need to avoid them. Women who are Clear can wear colors that would be way too bright for the rest of us, and on them, they will look normal.

They might not even seem as bright when those who are Clear Dominant wear them! Fun, right?

Check out this example, a woman of color who is Clear. See all of that glorious color she can wear?

If it is, you get to have the fun of playing with all those bright color combinations, to see which ones you love best.

If you're not sure, find out by taking the free color analysis quiz I created for women of color.

If you don't quite feel right in the clothes you wear, you may be thinking it's you, when actually, it's just that you're wearing the wrong colors.

I can promise you that you will never look more beautiful than when you are wearing your ideal colors. They will help you shine your light in a way nothing else can.

Color Analysis: Intro to the Soft Dominant Color Home

Introduction to the Soft Dominant Color Home

The Soft color home, which we are looking at today, is a very sweet color space.

The colors are soft, and the ideal color combinations are low-medium contrast. Might you be Soft Dominant?

How to Know if You are Soft Dominant

If bright colors really wash you out and make you fade, you might be Soft Dominant.

As I mentioned above, Softs need softer colors. And even white, unless it’s a soft one, can be too much. So colors that are even brighter than that can easily overwhelm them.

Another clue that you might be Soft Dominant is the way you feel about your coloring. If you have ever wanted to wear brighter colors to give your coloring a lift, or “fix” it in some way, this might be you, because that is a common Soft mistake.

You are perfect just the way you are, and do not need any fixing.

If you are Soft Dominant, I just want to encourage you that you can still live life in full, glorious color, even if that color is softer. And in fact, you will feel even more beautiful, when you wear the colors that support you best.

Your personalized palette will be filled with the colors that light you up and make you shine and glow. That is true for every color home, of course, but sometimes, Softs don't believe that, at first.

Have a look at our example, a woman of color who is Soft Dominant and beautiful...

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
