A few days ago, we talked about creating a fall mini capsule wardrobe and a daily uniform. I wanted to follow up on that post by offering you a free printable planner you can use to jot down your ideas for both.

In a comment, let me know which colors you have chosen.

See you next time!

The Kibbe Quiz for Black Women

If you are a black woman like me, you may have experienced this, too. You go to take a Kibbe quiz, or another body shape or body type quiz, and you try to compare yourself to the examples provided, but it doesn't quite work. Because your body doesn't quite match any of the examples.

Me, too! And a lot of the quizzes offer celebrity examples, so I got curious about one style typology in particular. David Kibbe's.

Maybe if I looked at the women of color for each type, it would be helpful. But some had no celebrity women of color as examples and quite a few had only one. Hmm.

Read on to see what I have done about it...

A style typology is designed to help you identify your type, and based on that type, help you figure out what to wear.

David Kibbe, Metamorphosis & The Image Identity System

In the late 80s, David Kibbe, modified and adapted one or more style typologies already in use, identified and named 13 types, and wrote a book about them called Metamorphosis.

There were five main Kibbe types: Dramatic, Natural, Classic, Gamine and Romantic. And then the variants were: Soft Dramatic, Flamboyant Natural, Soft Natural, Dramatic Classic, Soft Classic, Flamboyant Gamine, Soft Gamine and Theatrical Romantic.

Though these types were connected to personality, they weren't based on it. According to Kibbe, it is your physical characteristics that determine your type, and together they make up your individual combination of yin vs. yang.

What he means by that is the use of descriptors like short, long, curved, straight, soft, taut, wide, narrow, round, balanced, etc., as applied to your bones, flesh, facial features, and more, to identify your composition.

Eventually, he decided to get rid of the five main types, leaving only the variants.

Kibbe Groups & Kibbe Explainers

Then, long after the book went out of print, Facebook discovered it and him, and groups were formed to study this typology so that each group member could figure out her own type, and help others do the same. He eventually was invited to join the groups and soon took them over.

But women had difficulty understanding the system and applying it to themselves. Quizzes were made and whole sections of the book appeared on Pinterest and in other places.

Kibbe interpreters and explainers came along to try to make the system easier to decode, and some of them developed their own businesses by creating similar typologies designed to identify a woman's place in the system.

But Kibbe, What about...?

A LOT of the examples used in the quizzes others created, used in videos by Kibbe explainers, or found on his celebrity examples list were thin, Caucasian celebrities. And women of color, or those who were plus-sized, had trouble finding their place.

So last month, I got curious about just how many celebrity women of color were on the Kibbe list. And when I found out how small that number was, I wondered if I should create a Kibbe quiz for black women...

Autumn Accessories

I love autumn! The leaves and the trees, the clothes I get to wear. Apple and cinnamon chai tea. Even the release from summer's crazy heat.

Do you love it, too? I normally get pretty excited to see what's in the stores and catalogs each fall season. But since this is turning out to be an extended time of all dressed up and nowhere to go, I'm feeling much less excited this time around.

On the other hand, we do occasionally get to leave the house, even if it's just for errands. And autumn accessories are an affordable to still have fun with fall.

Autumn Masks

Buying fun autumn masks might be one way to lean into the curve as this dreadful pandemic rages on, this fall. And if you have decided to buy fewer new clothes, getting creative with your masks is an alternative way to do some fall shopping.

I found all of these on Etsy, and at the time this post was written, they were all in stock. Here are the links where you can find them.

Aren't they delightful? I wouldn't mind having a few of these myself...

Pumpkin and Plaid
Orange and Fall
Fall Leaves
Autumn Leaves Print
Fall Colors
Autumn Fall Foliage
Autumn/Winter Themed Mask
Marigold and Plaid
Autumn Face Masks with Ties

And this one below is the one I ordered. I think I got the last one!

Autumn Accessories

In addition to autumn jewelry, scarves and other accessories in autumn colors, you can find lots of them in colorful prints with fall motifs. And for those of you who can't wear warmer colors, you can try silver or other versions.

No links this time, but Etsy and Amazon seem like good resources for fairly inexpensive autumn accessories. Which ones did you like best?

See you tomorrow!

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
