Spring 10x10 Challenge: Week Three Swap Out

Each Saturday, I have been sharing my experiences as I take the 10x10 spring capsule wardrobe challenge. Well, I'm three weeks in now, and I am still hanging in there with the challenge, but I did have to make a little switcheroo...

My 10x10 Swap Out

As you can see, in one of my pictures, I have added a second, outer layer. Though this cardigan is not one of my ten choices, I put it in the closet to wear on any chilly days we might have. Surprisingly, we have had a few!

And it has been happening so often that I decided during the week to swap out a top I hadn't worn so that I could make this rust cardi an actual part of my 10-piece capsule.

I swapped out my oatmeal-colored button down top. I figured that if I hadn't worn it yet, there was a good chance I wasn't going to, and I might as well exchange it for something the weather had proven I would keep wearing.

Here's What I Wore this Week

My Favorite Outfits this Week

Picture
Of my outfits this week, I'd say my favorites were the cool-morning ones with my rust-colored cardigan and my denim jacket. And the terracotta striped top layered over my olive one.

I really like layering, but just can't always do it with the painfully hot temps in the warmer seasons.

What was your favorite outfit this week?

By the way, I apologize for the sometimes grainy quality of my pics. My photographer, also known as beloved son, is not always available. :)

But sometimes, I am wearing even more vibrant color than the picture indicates. For example, the picture above, that I took with my iPad, is a close-up of the same outfit in one of the other pics, & I am wearing four colors.

Can you tell I'm thinking, "please let this one not look ridiculous," and that it wasn't my first try? A photog, I'm not!

See you tomorrow!

Love, Jeanine

How to Create French Style Outfit Formulas

Each woman’s style, and hence her way of building outfits, is unique. But to make it easier, I have broken down the core parts of an outfit that can be applied to create any effect. Every outfit should have basics, a statement focal point, a finishing piece, and basic accessories. Most of my clients come to me wearing outfits that are missing some of these parts, which tends to mean their outfits look unfinished, bland, or both. -Rachel Nachmias, The Curated Wardrobe

The Search for the Missing Statement Focal Point

In the quote above, Rachel names several items needed to build a good outfit formula. But in the book referenced above, she goes on to say that the biggest problems her clients face in creating their outfits is that they forget to create a statement focal point.

She says that having such a focal point gives the eye somewhere to go when someone looks at the outfit. Without it, you may find that something is off with your outfit, or that it seems plain or boring. That's a problem I have had with my own wardrobe, and now, I know that that is probably why.

In creating the outfit formulas for your capsule wardrobe, the focal point might be the most important thing to choose, and that is true for any capsule, French style or not.
A statement focal point can be any part of the outfit, from a blouse to a pair of earrings or even shoes, it just has to have the power to draw the eye. - Rachel Nachmias, The Curated Wardrobe

a floral neck scarf
a colorful blazer

Can you think of any ways to use one of these items to upgrade and create a focal point for one of your outfits?

The Outfit Formula Capsule Wardrobe Process

Curious about the outfit formula capsule wardrobe process? Then, you're in the right place...
Picture

The Outfit Formula Capsule Wardrobe

Instead of choosing several tops, pairs of pants and dresses that mix and match and calling it a wardrobe, the outfit formula capsule wardrobe begins with identifying what you need the wardrobe pieces for and which outfit formulas you'll need for your lifestyle.

It can be a minimalist capsule wardrobe, but doesn't have to be. You choose how much variety you want for the different occasions you get dressed for and that will determine its size.

Here are the individual parts of the outfit formula capsule wardrobe...

(1) One daily uniform you love that loves you back.

(2) Three-five outfit formulas that make you look fabulous, with at least one for each of your lifestyle needs.

(3) A 10-15 piece capsule wardrobe, or whatever size you choose.

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
