How to Create French Style Outfit Formulas

Each woman’s style, and hence her way of building outfits, is unique. But to make it easier, I have broken down the core parts of an outfit that can be applied to create any effect. Every outfit should have basics, a statement focal point, a finishing piece, and basic accessories. Most of my clients come to me wearing outfits that are missing some of these parts, which tends to mean their outfits look unfinished, bland, or both. -Rachel Nachmias, The Curated Wardrobe

The Search for the Missing Statement Focal Point

In the quote above, Rachel names several items needed to build a good outfit formula. But in the book referenced above, she goes on to say that the biggest problems her clients face in creating their outfits is that they forget to create a statement focal point.

She says that having such a focal point gives the eye somewhere to go when someone looks at the outfit. Without it, you may find that something is off with your outfit, or that it seems plain or boring. That's a problem I have had with my own wardrobe, and now, I know that that is probably why.

In creating the outfit formulas for your capsule wardrobe, the focal point might be the most important thing to choose, and that is true for any capsule, French style or not.
A statement focal point can be any part of the outfit, from a blouse to a pair of earrings or even shoes, it just has to have the power to draw the eye. - Rachel Nachmias, The Curated Wardrobe

Can you think of any ways to use one of these items to upgrade and create a focal point for one of your outfits?

My Favorite At-Home Outfit Formulas

Picture

Unless I am sick (like January’s 3-week monster flu), I don't wear the same thing during the day that I slept in the night before. Even if I am staying at home, I feel better if I change from one thing to another.

But I have chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, so there are lots of days when I don't feel like getting completely dressed, either.

What do you wear on those days?

I usually choose loungewear or pjs, and add a sweater.

My Favorite Homebody Outfit Formulas

One of my favorites is an idea I got from the year-round capsule wardrobe guide for moms that I got last year. I use a loungewear dress, instead of one I’d wear out, but the idea came from the book and it's one I really like.

I get to combine orange and red, which really brightens my day. It’s a fuzzy comfy orange button down cardigan that I wear with a red loungewear dress and fuzzy orange-and-red socks. This dress is midi length, but I also have a knee-length grey one, and two ankle length ones.

So I have a small loungewear capsule wardrobe that really makes those days more cozy and fun.

The casual mom capsule wardrobe guide is designed to help you create outfits that are comfy enough to wear at home, but that you can easily leave the house in, too. The idea behind it is to upgrade your daily uniform so that you feel more confident and presentable each day.

But I believe it's also perfect for homebody homeschool moms like me who spend several days a week at home with no particular place to go (as the song says).

Check it out here, if you're interested.

And let me know in a comment what you like to wear on days when you know you won't be leaving home.

See you next time!

Love, Jeanine

A Favorite Outfit Formula Variation

Outfit Formula Idea: A Variation

Picture
I got a great outfit formula idea for a from the year-round capsule wardrobe guide for moms that I got several months ago.

And I am determined to make this work for summer, once I can find a few of the sleeveless tops.

I was only wearing v-necks until this outfit idea caught my eye. It was a collared, button down top worn with a sweater and a pair of leggings or jeans. Well, I had two tops like that and wore them in the spring and summer, but never with anything else.

I immediately tried it with a duster and LOVED it!

Well, one of the suggested capsule wardrobe items for summer is a sleeveless version of this top, and if I can find one or two, I am thinking I may be able to pair it with my two shorter-sleeved dusters. That wardrobe guide has hundreds of outfit formulas and each season, I have gotten some great ideas to try.

Go check it out if you're wanting some outfit inspiration.

See you tomorrow!

Love, Jeanine

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
