What to Do When You Put Away Your Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Winter sometimes ends slowly, like a cold that leaves behind a long-lingering cough. So you may have put your coat away, but kept out other pieces of winter wardrobe, just in case.

If April is the month you'll say a final goodbye, here are some tips for what to include as you put away your winter clothes that will make your next winter style season a better one...

3 Tips for Putting Away Your Winter Capsule Wardrobe

The first thing to do is to let go of anything that no longer fits, has too much wear and tear, or for whatever reason should not be a part of your next winter capsule wardrobe.

Confession: I often break one part of this rule.

My weight fluctuates, and hanging on to some of the clothes that no longer fit saves me money in the long run. So I guess, since you know yourself best, this could be a rule you might break, too.

But less is more when it comes to peaceful choices and an easy capsule wardrobe, so in general, if you're not going to wear it - get rid of it. :)

And once you clear out the riff raff, here's what you can do with the clothes you plan to keep...

(1) Take Pictures: if you haven't been taking pictures of yourself all along, give yourself a day to try on all of your winter clothes and take pictures of yourself in each outfit.

Do a complete head-to-toe look, choosing the accessories you would wear with it, and for each outfit that you know is one of your bests, take a picture. Then, create a collage you can either store online, or print and store with the clothes.

This tip is a great way to make sure you remember the outfits that were your favorite, that you want to be sure to wear next winter.

(2) Write Love Notes: if you identified any outfits that were ideal for particular occasions, write that down and include that when you put them away.

So, if you loved a particular outfit for date night, or eating out with friends, this way you can be sure to remember that when the winter season returns.

(3) The Wish List: if there was anything you thought would be perfect to add to this outfit or that one, but you couldn't find it, make a list so you can start looking early and find it to enjoy next winter.

Or there might be clothes you want to keep but have altered before next winter. Make a note of them, too, on your wish list.

For example, I fell in love with animation and detail this winter, but some of those outfits could have used even more. For example, a printed scarf to go with a striped top, or shoes to add one more repetition of a color (like grey ones or the beige ones I used to have).

Write those ideas down and you'll have them to prepare your next winter capsule wardrobe before you need it.

What were some of your favorite winter outfits? Tell me in a comment.

See you next time!

Love, Jeanine

New Year: New Capsule Wardrobe Challenge

Your ultimate goal is to create a wardrobe that you love, in which every item of clothing speaks to who you are, and to create a space for your clothes to breathe—by eliminating clutter. -Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris by Jennifer L. Scott.

Is it Time for a Closet Detox?

Ideally, your closet should be filled with a capsule wardrobe you love that loves you back. The things you are hanging onto and putting up with that you know are not right, are taking up valuable real estate that should be reserved for clothes that deserve it.

The beginning of the year is an ideal time to take inventory and set an intention to create a wardrobe you will love, not tolerate.

And the first step to creating it is to get rid of the not-quite-rights. If you can't bear to part with them completely, at least get them out of your closet.

The reality is that once you begin to purge your closet of clothing you’re not using, you’ll be able to think more freely and feel incredibly un-burdened by clutter. - Shop Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet with Style by Melanie Charlton Fascitelli.

The Winter Capsule Wardrobe Challenge

I suggest you aim for about 15 pieces. What I mean by that is 5 pieces for your coldest days, 5 pieces for hotter days and a five piece core wardrobe that can be worn all year long or worn during the transitions to colder or warmer weather. So, at any given time, you might only be wearing 10 pieces or so, depending on the time of year.

Here’s what your capsule wardrobe might look like...

THE CORE WARDROBE
1 crew neck or v-neck tee shirt
1 SS button down
1 pair of jeans or khakis
1 pair of leggings
1 SS maxi dress

THE WINTER WEATHER FIVE
1 pair of corduroy pants or lined jeans or pants
1 long skirt or LS dress
1 pullover sweater
1 LS cardigan or duster or jacket
1 LS crew neck or v-neck tee (the opposite of the other one for pairing)

THE SUMMER WEATHER FIVE
1 tank dress
1 tank top
1 pair of shorts
1 mini skirt
1 pair of cropped pants

The ability to mix and match your clothing and create many possibilities is of the utmost importance. You should be able to pair every item with every other item in your ten-item wardrobe. -Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris by Jennifer L. Scott.

Have fun with it & choose only the pieces that flatter you best.

And once you have chosen and gathered your capsule, challenge yourself to wear only those pieces for a set amount of time. Let us know how it goes.

See you next time!

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
