Finding the Right Foundation: Tips for Women of Color

I come from a lineage of women with beautiful variations of dark skin tones. Unfortunately, most of their shades of brown were excluded from the cosmetics industry during that time so they weren’t afforded the opportunities that brown girls have now. I’m thankful that the cosmetics industry is making major strides when it comes to foundation but there’s still more work to be done." - Cosmopolitan

7 Tips for Women of Color: Finding the Right Foundation

(1) Use a foundation that matches your undertone.

(2) You may need to mix together two foundation shades.

(3) The chest area or jawline are the best areas to test foundations.

(4) Use a lighter foundation on your t-zone & darker one on the outer edges of your face.

(5) Get color matched every season, because your complexion may change.

(6) Before applying foundation, use concealer for darker areas

(7) Use gentle skincare products to help even your skin tone. Did you know that hyperpigmentation can be caused by your skin's reaction to harsh chemicals in the products you use on your face?

Makeup on a Budget: Foundation as Concealer

Many women of color need more than one foundation and I use both Shinto 3 and Shinto 4.

Tip for Makeup on a Budget: I use a blend of those two foundations as concealer. Once I realized I would need to use them both, due to lighter and darker areas on my face, I decided to invest in both foundations.

And since the coverage is really good, I chose to save money by using them, as a concealer.

Here's a before and after picture, showing what a difference they make in their sneaky, super-secret, budget-saving concealer role...

I loved this! I always have to mix my foundations as well, but I found a brand ironically not designed for women of color that works perfect for me. I do have to change shades when seasons change, but that's normal.

Thanks, Hilary! Yes, you're right - that's normal. Happens to me, too.

That graphic with the women's arms and foundation shades was very illustrative! Great illustration. I have been improving my skin care and with that, I have a renewed interest in make up. Your posts are so helpful.

Thank you, Julie!! That's great! I'm the same way. When I feel good about my skin, I get more interested in makeup.

This is very helpful. When I was much younger, I thought that using makeup was pointless because I believed that i was too ugly to benefit from makeup. Fortunately, when I learned how to draw people, I discovered that no one was ugly so I couldn't possibly be too ugly for anything. I am very interested in makeup now, but struggle to find the right shade as my skin tends to be golden-yellow.

Thanks, Alice! Good to see you. You know, I used to think I was ugly, too. I'm glad you don't think so, anymore! Hmm. If your skin is golden yellow, it sounds like your coloring is warm, which would mean you need warmer shades and colors for your makeup. Cool ones will just sit on top of your skin.

I'm set with no makeup but my granddaughter is the type that won't open the door without her makeup on. She mixes hers too!

Oh, cool! I think I am somewhere in between the two of you. Sometimes days go by without makeup, but if I am going somewhere, I usually put some n. Not a full face, though, most of the time.

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
