How to Create a Column Capsule Wardrobe

In September, I told you how to build a small, core wardrobe of basics in one post, and how to use duster cardigans to create a capsule wardrobe in another one.

Those tips I shared can help us, today, too, as we focus on how to create signature style that will flatter you, no matter what your color type, your style type or your style personality. A column-based capsule wardrobe, personalized to your specific needs, will give you the freedom to choose whatever you want in your closet, and know that your outfit will be perfect for you.

How to Create a Column Capsule

A column based capsule wardrobe is created by choosing pieces that create a column of color, either inside or outside, that mix and match together well. The columns are likely to be neutral basics and the accent pieces will blend well with them and with each other.

Here is a process or strategy you can use to create a column-based capsule wardrobe for yourself...

(1) Start with choosing 4 pieces in neutrals from your signature color palette.

If you are going to create inside columns, choose two tops and two bottoms. If your plan is to create outside columns, choose a layering piece, like a jacket or cardigan and a bottom.

For example, you could choose a top and bottom (or topper and bottom) pair in black and another in grey, or dark brown and camel, or brown and black. If you want to add in a comfy house dress, you could find one in one of the two neutral colors, or in a print that includes one or both of them.

(2) Choose two more pieces in your best accent colors.

If you chose your initial pieces in dark brown and camel, your accent colors might be pumpkin and olive green. If you chose grey and black, your accent colors might be green and plum.

(3) Find accessories in your neutral colors or in prints that combine as many of your chosen colors as you can.

So if your capsule wardrobe's color palette is dark brown, camel, pumpkin and olive green, you might find one scarf or mask in dark brown, camel and pumpkin, and another in olive green and brown camo.

(4) Once you have created your capsule plan and chosen as many of the pieces as you can find in your closet, make a wish list of the pieces you still need.

(5) Then, begin to plan several column outfit formula combinations using the pieces you already have.

Have I given you some ideas about how you might create a capsule wardrobe using the column of color idea? Tell me which colors you would choose.

See you tomorrow!

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
