Have you figured out which style personality is yours, from the four we looked at last week? Or maybe you chose one or two from the round-up I gave you a week ago? The next step in your style evolution is to make it your own by integrating into your wardrobe. Read on, and I'll tell you how... Style Criteria: The Signature Style TrifectaYou may remember that last month, I told you about the style trifecta, the three criteria for a signature style capsule wardrobe... (1) It's in your signature colors. (2) It matches your style type. (3) It expresses your style personality. We address all three facets of signature style here at the Life in Color blog. But today, we are focusing on the third one, and answering this question today... Once you know your style personality, how do you create a capsule wardrobe that expresses it? How to Use Your Wardrobe to Express Your Style PersonalityI suggest that you first create or choose a small, core wardrobe of basics. If these were the only pieces in your capsule wardrobe, it might be called minimalist. But you'll add to them to create a fuller, more expressive wardrobe. Basics are simple, timeless, foundational pieces that can be paired with almost anything in your closet. - Real Simple Starting with a Core Wardrobe of BasicsNormally chosen in neutral colors, basics are the tank tops, tee shirts, cardigans, pants, leggings or other pieces you wear year-round and add to seasonally, or whenever you want to create a new capsule wardrobe. Your core wardrobe (of basics) can be as small or as big as you would like, or as you need. If you want a small one, choose at least four neutrals - maybe a top or bottom in two different colors. Once you have that in place, you'll use your accessories and layering pieces to express your style personality. Jewelry, shoes, scarves, jackets, cardigans and other similar pieces can accent your core wardrobe and add color and style to what you already have. Don't go buying or choosing your basics yet, though - because they need to match your style type. If they can be counted on to do so, you'll have a little more room for splurging, shall we say, on personality pieces that may be less than perfect matches for your type. But obvs, whenever possible, we want all facets of your style to be in harmony. Should you ignore style personality right now, if you're mostly at home? I say no, because they are likely to be the parts of your wardrobe that make you feel most like you. But if your budget is tight, start small. Even one much-loved accessory, that you can wear often, will support your style. What do you want to add to your core wardrobe? See you tomorrow! Love, Jeanine

That's a great idea, Martha! Since you have so many pairs of jeans, you could build an entire core wardrobe around tops and layering pieces.

LOL about grey as a personality! It might mean a reluctance to play with color. Try adding other light colors - like maybe a light blue - and see what you think.

I have grey walls in my house, shades of gray, to set off bright colored art on walls, colorful artistic carpets on floors. Gray can be a great way to make color pop. 10/12/2020 01:05:25 pm
Well, that's great, Vidya! You can go far with color.

Neat! Bet I know which color you will build it around. I'd be curious to know which color or colors you would add. If you already have mostly black, then you have an excellent core wardrobe already, and that's a great foundation for creating a capsule wardrobe.

Jeanine, you are so articulate. I think I'm basically doing your system. I have basics that flatter my figure-- leggings and very narrow pants, plus mostly tunic- to knee-length tops and sweaters. My basics are mainly solids, although I now have some lovely patterned tops. I have a number of scarves that lift the energy of my solid-top-solid-pant-solid-blazer combinations when I wear those. I have a collection of artsy earrings and some necklaces, even a few pins that brighten up a blazer or loose coverup. But I would like to unify my wardrobe more, so I'm studying your system. Thanks!

I could have written this, Kebba! I have what I call my “pandemic uniform” wardrobe... black yoga leggings & tunics, skinny blue jeans & solid-colored ve-tees, simple maxi-dresses in black or navy blue.... which I amend expressively with scarves, sweaters & jackets of various formality levels, styles & colors.... sandals of various rugged or elegant sorts in black & brown & brights, classic ballet flats & boots.... plus artistic earrings and a filigreed Celtic cross, though a publuc-health scientist has cautioned me against jewelry (germ catchers) in the pandemic. When I worked, I wore slim black pants with bright solid-colored tops and various complementary jackets, tweed, denim, boiled wool, etc. Now I feel less drawn to those bright solid-color tops.... pandemic mood? I am now loving long buttonless cardigans, sometimes hooded, in rich but not bright colors, with interesting textures.

Oh my goodness, Susie - I want your wardrobe!! Or at least to enjoy looking at your closet. Your style remind me a lot of mine, but I don't have all of the pieces yet that I would like to have. I have a difficult time finding tee shirt maxis that don't swamp me and that is what I am picturing as you describe yours. Anyway, it sounds like you have great pandemic style! 10/14/2020 09:15:44 pm
Thank you so much, Kebba!! Oh, that sounds fantastic! You really are doing the system I described. Scarves are so wonderful, aren't they?

Jeanine, yes, scarves are wonderful! A few of my favorites came from yard sales for a buck or so, before the pandemic. Susie Laird is a friend of mine since college days--always a carefully and beautifully groomed. Jeanine and Susie Laird-- Oh my! We have the same wardrobe ethos! What fun to discover this! :-) 10/13/2020 12:52:18 am
I never thought about style personality until this month, with this blogging challenge. I am starting to be more aware of how I choose the clothes that I want to wear and how I pick accessories to go with them. I can see that I like the comfort of a pure natural, but that I have the energy of a creative original. Now I can start to create the look that I think is truly me. Thank you for the guidance and I look forward to continuing this fashion adventure.

Alice, have you seen my weekend post, where I share what my style personality blend is? I mentioned you! It's great that you are becoming more aware, because it will refine your shopping experiences. The more I pay attention to my own quirky preferences, the easier it is to avoid buying close-seconds I'll never wear and to spot the treasures in disguise that are just slightly different than what I intended to find.

i saw it in the morning. I didn't write a blog post on Saturday, so I missed it! And, yes, I can see how much alike our style personalities are. I think that being writers has something to do with it, that we want to show with our whole beings the stories that we tell. Leave a Reply. |
