Before reading this post, take a deep breath in and let go of any stress you have been feeling today. Imagine that your closet is now filled with all of your very best colors, and that anything you choose to wear will be perfect. And what you want to choose today are the most comforting colors in your closet. Can you see them in your mind's eye?
What is a Self-Care Color Palette?
Perhaps you're older, worried that you may become infected and seriously ill. Maybe you're doing your best to keep your family healthy while trying to balance work with caring for your children while schools are closed. Or you're feeling isolated, separated from friends and loved ones during this period of social distancing.
A self-care color palette is a set of colors you have chosen that you find soothing or comforting, that you can reach for and count on for help, when you are experiencing negative feelings or stress.
It's obviously only going to be one piece of your stress relief plan or self-care routine. But when you are dealing with ongoing stress - and right now, most of us are, with this pandemic - you want to stack the deck with helpful resources and strategies.
How to Create a Self-Care Color Palette
According to Emmy award winning stylist, David Zyla, in his book, Color Your Style, there are two colors you might use to create a soothing, comforting, restorative self-care color palette. They are the darkest color you can find in your iris, and the lightest one. He calls them your energy color and your tranquil color, respectively, and states that the first will restore your energy & help you be calm and centered, while the second helps you "relax & release stress and recover from a challenging situation."
How can you find those two colors?
I suggest taking the clearest picture of one or both your eyes that you can, and then, look at them closely.
If you are a woman of color, you may have brown eyes, but don't assume that that means that your two colors are versions of brown. You may find that a closer look reveals colors you didn't know were there.
My Self-Care Color Palette
Though I have seen David Zyla twice (love him!) and have a wonderful color palette from him, his book tells you how to do this process, yourself, so I decided to do so and show you what I found...
Can you see each of those three colors in the picture of my eye?
I took several to make sure of what I was seeing and then, used Canva to find them and create the graphic. So those are all colors I can use as part of my self-care color palette, and luckily, I already have them in my closet.
And that's the thing I want to point out.
Once you know the colors you are, they become a part of your color palette. Finding the ones that come from your eyes is just finding a subset of the color palette you already have. So you got this!
But if you're not sure what your color palette is, take my free online color analysis quiz and find out.
By the way, you don't have to limit your self-care palette to two or three colors. You're likely to find at least one color you can use as a neutral, to pair with the other colors. And you may find variations on the self-care colors.
Over to you...
If, like most of us, life has been more stressful since this pandemic extravaganza began, here's one more idea for self-care. Find your comforting and soothing colors, and when you do, place them where you can see them and wear them as often as you can.
My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.
Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.
