The Signature Style Strategy Every Woman Can Use

Take a moment to think about these two questions. If I could show you how to resolve one body type challenge, what would it be? Which part of your body challenges you most when it comes to creating signature style?

Whatever your challenge is, I will be offering a solution this week, so stay tuned.

Resolving Style Challenges

What keeps you from creating the signature style you want?

I remember when I was in my mid-20s and it occurred to me that maybe every woman could be beautiful. I had been to a woman's show, and stopped at two booths that had image consultants, and I learned that it was their job to take whatever their clients handed them - challenges, problem areas, etc. - and create something beautiful with it.

When I was younger, I thought that if you were overweight, that was the cause of any and all figure challenges, and your best bet was either to ignore them, or to wear tent dresses.

But the image consultants were teaching women little tricks that would make them look better, even if nothing changed. That idea was revolutionary to me, and one way or another, I have been dedicated to style ever since.

Today, I will pass on one of the tricks I have learned.

And by the way, I did come to believe that every woman could be beautiful, and indeed, already is!

Columns: A Signature Style Solution Every Woman Can Use

Whether you need to create an inside column or an outside one depends on where your challenges are.

My biggest challenge is my belly, so I need an inside column, like the one above.

But let's say yours is that you hips are wider than your shoulders. You would want to try an outside column.

Using the example above, her jacket would be black and her top an animal print. I'd suggest that her jacket be shorter, too.

Have you ever worked with an image consultant?

And if not, would you like to? ;)

My passion is virtual style days because it gives us so much time to address every facet of creating signature style, including all the tips and tricks that resolve style challenges.

Though I don't believe that the standard of beauty is the hourglass figure and I think that honoring your basic style type is better than hiding behind another one, I do think that every woman should know how to redirect attention away from problem areas if she wants to do so.

Do you agree?

See you tomorrow!

Love, Jeanine

This is a neat trick. My problem is that I end up wearing tops one size bigger because I am “top heavy.” 😜 With Menapause middle, it's hard to get things that work. Sorry - TMI? 😁

Nope, not TMI for an image consultant! You might want to try prints and patterns for your tops, and an inside column.

I had an image consultant in modeling school at age 12. LOL I don't really think about those things much -- I am tall and fairly thin. Since I had my transplant, I have periods where I am not as thin but I don't really have much to complain about.

I really feel weird having discussions about clothes because of that. I find your posts interesting though-- I am learning stuff!

Being tall and thin does mean you fit the standard often used by fashion designers, which makes you lucky. But you could still be interested in finding your best colors and styles, and in new style trends, etc., so no need to feel weird about it at all. :)

Reading your post reminds me what impedes many folks who read my reports. Vocabulary shortage. I will employ language from biology, medicine, and engineering on a single page- any one of which many may lack background, but in all three even more do. Once you got to "block", I was blocked.

Roy, that's great that you understand that that happens with your posts. So do you mean, when I mentioned "columns?" What I mean is a monochromatic look if worn one way (with a different color on the outside) or something like a suit where the outside colors are the same, but the inside color, say the top, is different. Does that help?

I used an image consultant once many years ago. What I loved about it and what made me uncomfortable too was that she put me in silhouettes and colors I would not have chosen. When I tried on these outfits for my husband, his first reaction was, "wow!" So I learned it was helpful to learn from a pro! I want to look like a good version of me (at this age and shape), not just what's trendy. There's got to be a middle ground for that! Looking forward to more suggestions!

Hmm. It sounds like she didn't take your style personality or even style wishes into account. When you work with an image consultant because you want to look your very best, then the most important things are the colors and silhouettes and shapes that flatter you. next most important is your style essence or personality, and ideally, the stylist would help you find a way to express that in your outfits. Trends come last, and only really matter if the woman wants to know what they are. I think I will write a brief post about this because I totally get where you are coming from and believe she did you a disservice. There is always a way to find common ground.

Jeanine, I agree completely. I have been using the column trick, not knowing it had a name, for many years. Love it, love it! And yes, every woman can be beautiful.

I think that my biggest challenge is my height or lack thereof. Fasbion is not designed with short people in mind. You never see short models. I would like to create an illusion of height, preferably without high heels because my ankles tend to bend too much to make wearing high heels practical. I'm not sure how to do that. The only thing that I can think of offhand is to avoid horizonal stripes because that tends to make me look even shorter. And I'm not attempting to look like a Munchkin!

Great information about columns. My biggest problem is my tummy. I lost whatever hourglass I had years ago so this is why I usually wear loose fitting tops or if I wear a tank top I always wear a button up shirt over it that is not tucked in.

    Hi, I'm Jeanine Byers :)

I'm an author,  Christian image consultant, proud former homeschool boy mom of a college student, Hallmark movie fan and big cuppa tea drinker.

I believe that creating your signature style is a spiritual calling. It's about seeing yourself as God does and delighting in your own beauty and style.

I'm specializing in color analysis and signature style for black women.

As women of color, we often aren't analyzed correctly when we receive color analysis. And all of our lives, we have been given sometimes subtle, and sometimes more overt societal messages about not meeting the cultural standards of beauty.

My mission is to help you discover, embrace and celebrate your own beauty and style.

Thanks for dropping by! I'll see you soon.

    Love, Jeanine
