Your ultimate goal is to create a wardrobe that you love, in which every item of clothing speaks to who you are, and to create a space for your clothes to breathe—by eliminating clutter. -Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris by Jennifer L. Scott.
Is it Time for a Closet Detox?
Ideally, your closet should be filled with a capsule wardrobe you love that loves you back. The things you are hanging onto and putting up with that you know are not right, are taking up valuable real estate that should be reserved for clothes that deserve it.
The beginning of the year is an ideal time to take inventory and set an intention to create a wardrobe you will love, not tolerate.
And the first step to creating it is to get rid of the not-quite-rights. If you can't bear to part with them completely, at least get them out of your closet.
The reality is that once you begin to purge your closet of clothing you’re not using, you’ll be able to think more freely and feel incredibly un-burdened by clutter. - Shop Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet with Style by Melanie Charlton Fascitelli.
The Winter Capsule Wardrobe Challenge
I suggest you aim for about 15 pieces. What I mean by that is 5 pieces for your coldest days, 5 pieces for hotter days and a five piece core wardrobe that can be worn all year long or worn during the transitions to colder or warmer weather. So, at any given time, you might only be wearing 10 pieces or so, depending on the time of year.
Here’s what your capsule wardrobe might look like...
THE CORE WARDROBE
1 crew neck or v-neck tee shirt
1 SS button down
1 pair of jeans or khakis
1 pair of leggings
1 SS maxi dress
THE WINTER WEATHER FIVE
1 pair of corduroy pants or lined jeans or pants
1 long skirt or LS dress
1 pullover sweater
1 LS cardigan or duster or jacket
1 LS crew neck or v-neck tee (the opposite of the other one for pairing)
THE SUMMER WEATHER FIVE
1 tank dress
1 tank top
1 pair of shorts
1 mini skirt
1 pair of cropped pants
The ability to mix and match your clothing and create many possibilities is of the utmost importance. You should be able to pair every item with every other item in your ten-item wardrobe. -Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris by Jennifer L. Scott.
Have fun with it & choose only the pieces that flatter you best.
And once you have chosen and gathered your capsule, challenge yourself to wear only those pieces for a set amount of time. Let us know how it goes.

Personal Style Journal Prompts
We begin with these three questions. Grab your journal…
(1) What do you want your clothes to tell the world about who you are?
(2) What do you want to tell yourself about who you are?
(3) How do you want your clothes to make you feel?
Create an Inspirational Capsule Wardrobe Vision Board
Once you have answered those questions in your journal, use the answers to create a vision board. It can be physical, using magazines, or online, using Pinterest, or other online resources.
